updates! @ 1:06 AM

Organic Chemistry is fun! I'm referring to the lab work and the lecturer, whom we affectionately called Rupert, in case you are mistaken that I've fallen in love with the subject as well.

Rupert always keep us awake in morning lectures by telling us stories after stories, some from his own experience, others about scientists who have made contributions in the past.

I love this lecturer of mine! haha.
Love him especially much when he told us his stories. Normally he will tell us how he disintegrate his laboratory in his undergrad days. He really has an extraordinary number of accidents... One of his stories is abt the story of the unlabelled brown bottle.

During his undergrad days, he found an unlabelled brown bottle while clearing up the lab. Because it was unlabelled, he didn't know what it was, and simply chuck it one side vigourously. When he came back the next day, he found that the whole lab was completely ruined because of an explosion that occured -.- And among the remains, they found an unlabelled brown bottle. But, he still insist that it might or might not be him who cause the explosion. The students were excused from sch for one week =)

It turns out that the unlabelled brown bottle is a bottle of very old ether. And becos of long term exposure to air, it was oxidised and peroxide were produced. Peroxides are very sensitive to 'vibration' and highly explosive. So it was actually that which caused the disintegration of the lab. Haha.

He went on to tell us that, that is the reason why people were so afraid of bottles of old ether. They will actually engage professionals to get rid of the bottles. And it cost a whooping (now, don't choke) $10 000 per bottle? WOW. I wanna do that when I grad. high profits sia!

I got to make indigo dye in the previous organic chemistry prac too. some pics to entertain you!

That's the indigo we made =))))) another view. The two bobdogs beside are our labels. instead of the conventional way of putting our names on label (so as not to mix up our samples with others when we put it into the oven to dry), we used the vvvv kawaii bobdogs.

our end products! we dyed the cotton squares with our very own indigo dye. Haha.. Had to wait for 60mins for the cotton to absorb the dye. hard work ok. Jessie drew the bobdogs again! :)

yepps that's all for todae! off to study econs! goshh. didnt do anything constructive today except sending proposals lo. sighhs.

hope to have time for updates! Haha.

Enjoy urselves, ppl!
